Our lot is no longer just a piece of a field, it's a basement! Last week construction crews went out to our build site and poured our foundation. It feels so much more real now that the build has actually started!
A few weeks ago, we staked out our lot. That basically means we measured out where our basement will be for the excavator to dig. We measured everything out and put in stakes and spray-painted lines.
In other news, we have decided for sure on the color brown for our siding with white trim. I asked all of you on Facebook and Instagram what you thought was the best color scheme: white with brown trim or brown with white trim and these were the results:
White Siding: 73.8% of votes
Brown Siding: 26.2% of votes
Despite white siding winning by a landslide from you guys, we still chose brown. We also asked you to comment on why you picked what you did and the ones who picked brown had very good points! It will wear better, look dirty less often (especially with our dirt backyard at first), we can brighten it up with white trim, and it's just plain more "us." It feels great to finally have that decision made! We also chose all of our doors, hardware, cabinets, rock, flooring and everything else for our house.
A few days after getting out lot staked out, excavation crews came and dug on the lines we painted for our basement! Our house plan looked way to small when the ground was flat, and now it looks a lot better!!
Once the excavation crews dug our basement, the foundation walls were poured. First, the subcontractors put up metal forms to pour the concrete into. After it’s poured, the forms are left until it dries. The subcontractors then come out and take the forms off.
Once the concrete was dry and the forms were removed, we headed over to do some finish work on the concrete to get it ready to be tarred and filled in. But we got to see our official basement!
First, we knocked off the edges of the metal reinforcements that go all the way through the concrete. It’s harder than it looks, we had to break tons of metal bars with sledgehammers! They’re pretty strong, as you can see below, Daylen is standing on some to knock off higher ones.
After ALL of those were knocked off, we swept the footings off so subs can come and spray tar on the part of the foundation that will be completely underground. Soon they’ll fill in the trenches on the sides and most of the cement in these photos will be underground! In the photo below, Daylen is standing next to our garage wall. Behind him is the deep trench that’ll be our basement walls.
Next will be putting in our window wells, filling in the trenches, pouring concrete for the garage and basement floors, and putting in radon pipes! We are so close to framing and so excited.
Thanks for reading! See you soon.
