We are officially building full time! From September - next summer when our house is done, we build full time hours! The more we work, the faster it gets done.
The past few weeks, we have been framing some other houses while waiting for subcontractors to work on our brand new basement. We are house #3 of 8. So far #1 is fully framed and ready for a roof, and #2 is almost done which means we are next! I’m really hoping we will have a roof before the snow arrives since they’re predicting logan of early snow this year. It looks like we won’t be shoveling out our house!
The photos below are from framing other houses. Ours has not been framed yet.
In between framing the other houses, we have gotten a few odds and ends done on ours so the subs can get our concrete done faster. First, we put on our window wells.
Who knew window wells wells went on at the beginning?! It only makes sense when you really think about it, but I had never considered it would be a priority to have our house trenches filled in. We spent a weeknight drilling holes into the foundation, and putting on the window wells. They’re heavy and not easy to work with! We have four window wells, it took about four of us to get them all on. They look great!
Next, we prepared for the concrete to be put in. They filled in the trenches on the outside of our house, so we have some room to walk right up to the foundation. We laid out plastic on the dirt bottom of our basement floor and put in a radon pipe. Radon is a big problem here in Utah, so every new house is required to put plastic in the bottom to keep radon from seeping up through the foundation, and a radon pipe to carry it out from below the plastic to the roof.
Before the flatwork concrete subs came, we also put our name and the year on a rock below the plastic. It’ll be there as long as the house is! The subs came and poured gravel shortly after.
We also put some rebar reinforcements in the garage. This helps the garage floor concrete have something to hold onto. Our garage is the biggest of the houses plans, so we also had to mark out a bigger slope so water isn’t trapped inside.
The next day we when we came out to build, we were surprised to find that the subcontractors had already poured our floors! We were so excited since it usually takes them a while to be able to come out. We have concrete floors now and are ready for framing!
There’s nothing else we can do on our house until our lumber is delivered next week, so we’ll be finishing up the other houses framing until then. If you’d like to volunteer on our house next week we’d love the help!
