Surprise! We're building our home!
Back in Spring 2018, we started talking with Neighborhood Housing Solutions about their Owner Builder Program. We waited patiently on the list until Spring 2019 when we were called in to formally apply! A few steps and some stressful waiting later, we are approved to build our own home!
In June, we picked out our lot and house plan. We drove out to see all the lots and picked our top two and ended up getting our first choice! I can't believe that this field will have our house on it!
We selected our lot at the end of May, and finished pre-construction classes last month. We have also selected the blueprints for our house! Our home design is called The Oaks. Here is an example of what it may look like:
Starting in a few weeks, we will start construction along with 8 other families to build each other's homes in 10 - 12 months. Each week a contractor will educate us on a different home building process, and we will work on each house until they are all done. Next spring when all of the houses in our group are done we will have a neighborhood open house! All of our tools are ready to go to build 8 houses.
Our blueprints have been set, but there are still a few things we get to design and choose. Things like exterior colors for siding, doors and trim, where we want carpet and laminate, our cabinets and lighting, and designing our closets. We have been talking about the colors lately and think we may have nailed them down! Our opinions have changed a lot during this process though, so they may change again. Right now we like dark brown siding with white trim, and white vertical siding for the roof pop-outs. Inspiration:
We are so excited for this adventure, and will be sharing updates as we build. As of right now we have a blueprint and our lot! Next comes the excavation, foundation and basement.
This week we went to an open house of the group that just finished construction. We saw many houses, and two that are our exact plan. It's so great being able to see it in real life since all we had seen was blueprints! We took our home building notebook and phone cameras and noted our favorite things from each house. We feel a lot more confident seeing our decisions in real life. Here are some things we liked:
