Last weekend we took a trip to Capitol Reef National Park in southern Utah with Daylen's grandparents. We drove down right after a client's wedding we photographed in Park City, UT on August 31! The wedding was on top of a ski resort, guests gondola-ed up to the ceremony location. It was a lot of fun to photograph!

When we got to Capitol Reef, we drove to the water-pocket fold, where all of the big red walls are, and hiked around in Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge. In the washes we saw lots of iron in the rocks, some holes, pioneer signatures, and some petroglyphs. It was super cool. We also saw a few overlooks on the way out and got to see a small storm roll in. Also, my Chacos did well on their first real adventure, as you can see.
Grandma and Grandpa were staying at the Torrey Schoolhouse, an old school that Butch Cassidy attended! Definitely the coolest hotel in Torrey.
Also on our first day at Capitol Reef, we stopped in Fruita, the city in the park with all of the orchards and pioneer houses, to take some photos. I wanted to get a photo of the barn with the red rocks for my mom, who loves it. We were lucky enough to see some mule deer by the Gifford House (an old pioneer house where you can get locally made pies, cooking supplies, salsa, etc.) for Daylen to photograph as well! The bucks still had velvet on their antlers so it was way cool.
For those who don't know, bucks grow velvet 'skin' on their antlers while they are still growing. In Fall, the velvet sheds off revealing the antler bone most people are familiar with. In Spring, the whole antler falls off, and new, bigger antlers grow. Seeing the velvet is pretty cool.
The next day, we drove around the back end of Capitol Reef, up through the big red walls to Grand Staircase, to Boulder, UT and back down. It was a really beautiful drive. We also got to see Anasazi State Park and learn about the ruins up in Boulder. On the way up, we saw an old clay pioneer house, a wash full of rainwater from the storm, red-ish, purple-ish dirt, and an overlook of all of Capitol Reef.
